Describe, with appropriate explanations, the key factors which affect the magnitude of the lattice energy of an ionic substance.

the lattice energy depend on the charges on the ions  as well as distance between the centers of the neigboring positive and negative ions. The greater the magnitude of  ion charge, the greater is the lattice energy.

Lattice enrgy is also inversaly proportinal to the distance between the neighboring ions, and this distance depends on the sum of the radii of the  ions. In the series of alkaline earth hydroxides-Mg(oH)2,Ca(OH)2,Ba(OH)2 etc--- the lattice energy decreases as the raduis of alkaline earth ion increases.
