A science fiction novel proposes the existence of the Ra-2 ion. Using current chemical theory, discuss whether such an ion is likely to exist.

Grab a periodic table. You'll see that Ra is located in group 2. What do all atoms want? An octet, because of its stable nature. The easiest way for a group 2 atom to obtain an octet is for it to LOSE 2 electrons, and hop down to a lower energy level. Losing electrons is illistrated by a + charge. Ra2+ may exist, but it's highly unlikely that Ra2- would. (You're opening up a whole new orbital with those extra electrons, which amounts to a higher energy, less stable ion)
