Sorry, I've been swamped. Here's the solution for the first problem.

1) Hydroxide extracts the alpha hydrogen.
2) Enolate attacks carbonyl of aldehyde.
3) Oxide protonated by water formed in step one.
4) Hydroxide removes alpha hydrogen; electrons go to form alpha-beta double-bond ejecting the hydroxyl group.
