1) Hydroxide extracts the alpha hydrogen.
2) Enolate attacks carbonyl of aldehyde.
3) Oxide protonated by water formed in step one.
4) Hydroxide removes alpha hydrogen; electrons go to form alpha-beta double-bond ejecting the hydroxyl group.
