Will 1-butanol and NaOH react? If so, what will the end products be? Generalizations are fine here. I don't need steps/equations/etc.

Many thanks!

Forgot to add that the NaOH is an aqueous solution.

Since the NaOH is going to exist as Na+ and OH- I'd think the 1-butanol would get deprotonated forming the 1-butanol conjugate and water.

And after it has been deprotanted that Na+ ion could bind to the carbanion.

So, a C-H bond breaks heterolytically.  The OH- accepts a H+, and the C- accepts Na+.  Subsitution reaction Smiley
