Okay, so I'm trying to balance the equation for the reaction between ethyl alcohol and boric acid. So far, this is what I've come up with:

C2H5OH+H3BO3==> ?

I'm pretty sure that it's a main type of reaction, but I'm stuck on figuring out the products. I'm also reasonably certain that it is an exothermic reaction. Also maybe we added methane.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What do you mean "maybe you added methane"?

Was this a lab or a problem?

Well, it was a lab.  The lab was to create a solution of ethanol and boric acid in a erlenmeyer flask. The flask had two tubes coming through the stopper, and rubber tubing connected gas to one tube and a bunsen burner to the other. When the bunsen burner was lit, the flame burned green. The assignment was to write the chemical equation for the reaction.

The gas was methane, but I didn't think that would change the equation.

Oh i have this.

There is no reaction. The boric acid is dissolved in th ethanol, when you blow the gas through , the gas gets "wet" with this solution.

When this "wet" gas enters the flame, electrons are excited and when they relax they emit a green light. It is Boron's electrons that are producing the green light.

Does "wet" mean that the gas is coated or saturated with the solution?

when the gas as run through the solution , it is carrying some of the solution into the flame
